Holmdel Township Committee Approves Feasibility Study for Indoor Multi-Use Recreational Center

Holmdel Township, NJ – Following a presentation by Holmdel Township Deputy Mayor Buontempo, on Tuesday, May 22, the Township Committee voted to proceed with an engineering feasibility analysis to examine next steps in the planning and development of an indoor, multi-use recreational center.

Buontempo asked for approval so Township engineers can begin working on a feasibility analysis that examines two potential sites for the recreational center -- the F&F property on Roberts Road and the Holmdel Swim and Tennis Club on Bailey Lane. Once the feasibility analysis is completed, the engineers will present their findings during a Township Committee meeting and offer a recommendation on which site is most suitable to house the indoor recreational center.

The feasibility analysis which is expected to be completed by the end of June, will examine many factors, including, but not limited to, the site’s acreage, accessibility and parking, and available tie-ins to utilities.

The Township issued a survey to assess the residents’ desire for an indoor recreational center and of the more than 5,000 surveys issued, over 1,100 responses clearly stated the need for such an amenity.

“The survey reaffirmed the Township’s primary need for access to more basketball courts,” said Buontempo. “Each year more than 800 boys and girls register to play in our leagues and we are struggling to find courts. An indoor recreational center with basketball courts that can be converted to other uses will be an enormous help in meeting our growing demand for space,” he added.

The original idea for an indoor recreational center was discussed previously as a potential investment in response to growing demand for space to accommodate a variety of sporting activities, including basketball, tennis, volleyball, lacrosse, soccer, wrestling, field hockey, softball, baseball batting cages and indoor track. The center can also accommodate the needs of the Township’s senior population, offering exercise options during daytime hours when the facility will face less demand. The versatile space can be converted for other uses as well, including special events.

“Once all studies and planning are complete, we will use a series of financial tools to cover the cost of the recreational center, added Buontempo.   “None of the scenarios that will be considered will require any tax increase or any contribution from residents. “We will go out for bonding and use available Open Space funding from the Township’s Open Space Trust Fund that is set aside for funding recreational endeavors.  We will look toward other sources of funding as well,” he added.

The Township will offer renderings and more details at the completion of the feasibility study.

Anyone with questions should contact the Holmdel Township Administrator.
